Mets Get Johan

Usatoday.com reports about the Mets landing Johan Santana:

“The deal is pending the Mets and Santana reaching agreement on a six- or seven-year contract extension and that Santana passes a physical; they have been granted a 48 to-72-hour window to do so. Santana has a no-trade clause that he will waive if agreement is reached on a contract extension.

The Mets paid a high price in prospects to land Santana, agreeing to send the Twins outfielder Carlos Gomez and pitchers Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra and Kevin Mulvey.”

Wow. I can’t believe it. The Mets got Johan Santana. I really don’t believe it. I can’t even put it into my own words how much my expectations have gone up about the Mets this year already. Sure, we lose Gomez, Mulvey, and Humber, all top prospects in the organization, but Johan Santana is one of the best pitchers in baseball and Mulvey, Humber, and Guerra don’t beat that.

Omar finally made a good move. Finally.

  • Great move, Omar!! Finally - a major improvement to a team built to win now….that disappointed last year! Time for another banner in RF.

  • This is just huge for the Mets… great signing if it all goes through. Lock for world series…

  • That is alot of prospects to give up for one pitcher. Santana has great stuff but is the contract going to be too crippling to help in the future. If they don’t win this year, it could be bleak for awhile.

The good part for the Mets is they gave up NO current MLB players to get him.

  • As a Twins AND Mets fan, I’m hoping this will be a win-win. Santana will almost undoubtedly be a force with a Mets, and considering his new team’s offensive pop should be a lock for a 20-win season. The Twins, meanwhile, are getting four prospects, and while their recent signings of journeyman veterans have been poor, they usually have an excellent eye for young talent.

I’m just glad the Twins got SOMETHING for Santana, rather than take the risk of a Torii Hunter repeat. And, I’m thrilled Santana isn’t going to that other New York team.

  • Tom, it is well worth it. All the prospects, although they are some of the best in baseball, add up to how good Santana is. I will take Santana over Mulvey, Humber, and Guerra any day of the week. The only part I don’t like in this trade is giving up Carlos Gomez, however I guess this just means that Omar is putting a lot of trust into Fernando Martinez.

  • Wonderful, the Mets get the best pitcher in Baseball. Now they have two young, top of the rotation guys, in Maine, and Johan.
    Mets for the WS!!

  • I guess my next question, since many of you have determined the Mets are already in the World Series is…

is Willie Randolph really the guy you want leading this team as manager. He stood by and WATCHED the collapse of last year and just kept repeating…. we are ok… we are ok.

    but they weren’t.

    thoughts?

  • No, Willie is definitely not the guy I want running the Mets, but hey, you have to live with what you have.

I often disagree with what he does, pitching moves, the lineup, favoring certain players. I just hope he learns from his mistakes, and we can succeed this year, finally.

Although we have choked the last two years, maybe THIS can be the turnaround. Hey, you never know.

    Ya Gotta Believe!
