Where Will Johan End Up

With nothing but chaos going on with this year’s winter meetings, it has been hard to tell where Johan Santana will be in a few weeks. Here is a breakdown of the top 3 teams:

1. Boston Red Sox

The defending champions, the Boston Red Sox, have been reportedly negotiating with the Twins trying to work something out. Rumor is that they don’t want to give up some of their main prospects:

The Red Sox are interested in acquiring the ace left-hander and are engaging the Twins in discussions. But Boston hasn’t budged on its proposal of pitcher Jon Lester, center fielder Coco Crisp, shortstop prospect Jed Lowrie and another minor league prospect. The Twins are believed to be insisting that both Lester and hot center field prospect Jacoby Ellsbury be included in the deal.

However, I also sense that they are going to realize that they are the defending champions, and they did this without great need of their prospects, and to get Johan Santana would just add to their incredibly dominant team.

2. New York Yankees

As much as I hate to say this, things are looking somewhat good for the Yankees, because Johan has been quoted for saying the Yankees and the Red Sox are top priorities for them. For who the Twins want them to give up, I doubt that they will trade for Johan. To get Santana they most likely would have to give up top pitching prospects such as Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy, and the already fan-favorite, Joba Chamberlain. As I said before, I doubt Steinbrenner would make this trade, even as crazy as he can be sometimes.

3. New York Mets

A week or so ago, we heard that most likely, this trade wasn’t even possible. Now, it looks better than ever, that is, if we want to part with every single one of our top prospects. Yes, everyone. We would need to give up Carlos Gomez, Mike Pelfrey, Phillip Humber, and also maybe our very young player, Fernando Martinez, who may be one of the top prospects in baseball in a few years. However, I also heard that the Twins want Oliver Perez. You know what? They can have him! Olly is great, don’t get me wrong, but his consistency frightens me. So the question is,

“Is it worth it to give up all of these players?”

Yes, it is. Do you think Mike Pelfrey and Phil Humber are going to do anything that tops the ability of Johan Santana? NO! I’m a little bit more worried about giving up our outfielders, but you know what, if that is what it takes to get Johan Santana, why not?

Unfortunately, we are third on the list, so, chances are, if the Red Sox or Yankees are willing to give up the same potential players, we won’t get him. But why not take a chance.

In Omar I (sometimes) Trust.Of those three teams, as far as who has the best to give, in my opinion the Red Sox have the best shot. However, I think the Mets can be able to do something. We’ll find out soon enough.

  • Would be amazing if Mets were to get Santana. However, they can not deal Gomez and Martinez in the same trade. They need to keep Martinez if they trade Gomez. Gomez’ hitting ability is still not definitely in the elite status. Heilman and/or Pelfrey or Humber is fine if they can get Santana. Omar needs to get a Number One Pitcher, or the last year at Shea will be disappointing like 2007…..no…..nothing will ever be as bad as the choke that ended 2007 - having an ace would have prevented a monumental collapse like 07.

  • I disagree that the Red Sox won the championship “without great need of their prospects.” Unlike Sox teams of yore, this one featured homegrown players in a lot of key positions. They had Youkilis at first, Pedroia at second, Ellsbury in center, Papelbon closing, Delcarmen in the bullpen, and Lester winning game 4. They also got a no-hitter from Buchholz, who will be rated as one of the top prospects in the game by Baseball America this spring. These guys are exciting, and cost-controlled for several years. As a Red Sox fan, I’m torn about trading them, even for a pitcher the caliber of Santana. I’d be perfectly happy if he went to the Mets, who need him more anyway. The problem is, the Mets’ prospects just aren’t rated that highly. The Twins need to get a top pitching prospect back, and nobody considers Pelfrey or Humber a potential ace.
